What it is like to work in the call centre?

As a Team Leader at AGA rangemaster my job involves managing and supporting a team of 24. I help to resolve issues with customers and support other parts of the business with reporting. I’m also a contact for repair companies and service providers.

I joined as a temp staff from an agency, became permanent and within the short space of a year rose to become a team leader! The Covid pandemic meant that, like a lot of people I had an usual start to a new job. I didn’t get to meet half of the team until quite a few months after and even when I got to meet everyone at the office, we couldn’t settle in quite yet because the office had suffered from heavy rain damage. It’s possible that these experiences brought us closer together. The company culture made me feel like AGA is a good place to invest in.

How has your career developed since you joined?

When I first started, myself and another team member were quickly identified to be part of the premier partner team. This involved exclusively working with retail contacts and building good relationships so that when they had issues with their customers, they could call us and we would sort it out. We had good dynamics to the point that they still contact me to share personal good news.

My team leader always encouraged my input with processes, ideas and suggestions and quickly identified me as a candidate for a team leader position. She encouraged me to apply for the role, and one day I answered a call with nervous anticipation only to find that I got the job! I was so excited!

What is the best thing about working for AGA?

The best thing about working for AGA is the people – we have a wide range of different people, personalities and everyone is always helpful. Even if you are having a bad day, you don’t dread coming into work, there is always someone there to pick you up and make you feel better. It’s a place you want to come in everyday and help people. It is satisfying, it really is.

Also – it is a diverse workplace. It might not seem like it is, if you’re unaware you might imagine it to be old fashioned, prestigious, inaccessible when it’s not like that at all. It’s important to me that I can represent AGA as a brown Asian woman so that anyone who might feel like it is not accessible for them to work here will know it is very much accessible, inclusive and diverse.

What do I outside of work? I’m a football mum. Do I need to say more? Hah! I have two boys that take a lot of my time. I love spending time with family and friends, and I also love cooking. I also enjoy horror films! You’ve got to love them!

What do you enjoy about being a team leader?

It’s about being able to help and support the team. I’m naturally a person that likes to be there for people and offer advice and support personally and professionally. So doing that in a professional way with the job that I do and the knowledge that I have is very satisfying. It’s good that people come to me for advice.
